Rock Climbing and Hiking | Living in Ecuador
If you’re looking for thrills, Ecuador offers rock climbers and hikers challenging routes and some of the most gorgeous scenery around. Here are some of the best spots to explore:
Cuenca
Named the Best Adventure Hub in 2014 by Outside Magazine, Cuenca is an excellent base camp for rock climbing and hiking. The historic city offers access to:
- Cajas National Park
Just 45 minutes from Cuenca, Cajas National Park boasts of highland paramos to hike through and unique rock formations that make for demanding climbs. The national park covers over 1,734 square miles and has over 200 lakes.
- Cojitambo
Located in the southern highlands, this popular rock climbing spot is just an hour’s drive from Cuenca. It also happens to be a World Cultural Heritage Site designated by UNESCO in 1999. Routes on Cojitambo are famous for their vertical quality, with 500-foot walls that are a challenge to any climber. There are, however, single-pitch routes as well.
Puerto Lopez
This small fishing village is the gateway to many of Ecuador’s delights. They include excellent spots for rock climbing and hiking:
- Machalilla National Park
The changing terrain in this national park offers spectacular views of fog forests and dry forests. It’s also a great vantage point to get a glimpse of amazing beaches. The views alone are worth the hike.
Yunguilla Valley
This beautiful valley just south of Cuenca has arresting spots for hiking and rock climbing.
- Yunguilla Reserve
Visits to the Yunguilla Reserve require permits. Park rangers will escort visitors as they hike through the cloud forest which is home to some of the rarest birds in the region. For arrangements visit their website.
